Loyal clients don't just jump at you out of nowhere - now if you' ve read the e - myth by michael gerber, you' ll know that loyal clients who come back and back don' t just jump at you out of nowhere. In fact, Michael Gerber talks about in his book that the key reason most businesses end up failing is because the person who started the business was what he calls an excellent technician but not someone who is strong at understanding what' s required from a business perspective. To attract and retain clients who rave about your business, you have to be providing a technically great service backed by good business practices, all of which needs to be delivered with a smile.


And while things have moved on a bit from when Michael Gerber first wrote the book that in essence is still an incredibly true statement. - there might be way more self help books, far more marketing seminars and business owners in general might be much more switched on in terms of what' s required but in essence most people still get into business not because they want to own a business, but because they are incredibly good at what they do and it just seems like the next logical step. There might be much more business help available out there these days. And that' s where a lot of people are today. And then they realise if they want to make that clinic/ practice/ salon/ whatever successful, they realise they' ve got to master the business skills too. They become very very good at whatever service they provide, they want the lifestyle that can come with being self employed or a business owner and so they start their own business. a clinic, a salon, a practice, a spa, a mobile company. Because even if you are the most amazing therapist, stylist, coach, healer, therapist or practitioner in the world, you won' t make any money if clients don' t know you are there.


They can' t buy anything if they don' t know where you are or what your website is called. - they can' t book if they don' t know your phone number. And they can' t become regular clients if they' ve never met you. So that' s why I' ve done so much work over the years on learning what works. Which means the amazing therapist who started the business ends up feeling as if they are wasting their time because the business isn' t doing as well as they want it to. I felt very much the same way. And I realised that while we could carry on giving the best service ever, it wasn' t any good if I was going to end up bankrupt because we didn' t have any clients coming in.


I was working so hard to get my clinic going, we had amazing service but noone was coming in. - so i watched what the bigger more successful businesses were doing, copied them and, adapted their strategies then kept testing and refining them till i came up with a blueprint for running my business which worked. As Michael Gerber says, to get around the fact that most people' s key skill is their ability as a technician( or therapist or stylist or coach for many of you on the call) , and they are in new territory with the business side of things, they need to find systems that work, adapt them to their business and then apply them over and over again for guaranteed success. And these strategies that I used in my first therapy clinic, I' ve used again in other practices since then and in fact I' ve even adapted the exact same strategies to use it in my current business today even though now I run a coaching business and membership site instead of the spas and clinics I used to run. But there is another category of heroes in our society that is often overlooked - YOU - the small business owner CEO. So please take a step back and allow me to appreciate you... Our society, celebrates as heroes, especially since 911 fire and police men and women and our armed forces men and women - and very rightly so.


Did you know that small businesses employ over 40 million Americans, with 98% of those companies employing less than 100 people, generating in excess of$ 5 trillion in sales each year? - at the same time, look at the risks small business owner ceos take every day: more than 400, 000 new small businesses start up every year, yet 80% of those will fail within 5 years. In fact, despite all the attention given to" big" business, the backbone of our economy is small business. It' s your capital, sweat and tears on the line everyday - and that of your family. A company changes control every 15 minutes. 96 percent of all companies fail within 10 years. 26, 000 new products, services and brands are introduced every year. 16 - 30 percent of all consumers change brands in one evening of watching TV commercials. It' s real tough out there! - and a corporation fails every 3 minutes. Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards Gala with a friend who was a local finalist. All 30 were celebrated and each had an awards show type professional video done about them and their company. What a wonderful program! 30 local businesses were celebrated in 8 categories. It was like an Academy Awards show for small business owner CEOs. You deserve an award - but the best I can do here is say: THANKS for what you do, and all success in your business and your life.


I wish you could have been there to see these great Americans be cheered by their employees, customers and friends, vendors with laughter and tears as they got the awards. - without you, our thriving us economy would not be the world leader it is today! Pat yourself on the back. At the same time, I want to use this occasion to ask you to do something for yourself as well: Give yourself a break! Take the day off and go do a round of golf with a friend. You may not make it to the Ernst and Young awards, but you are great nevertheless! Elrical safety is not shocking - in electrical injuries there are four main types of injuries: electrocution( will cause death) , electric shock, and falls, burns. The fall can cause serious injuries also. These injuries can come from direct contact with the electrical energy, electrical arcs that jumps to a person who is grounded, thermal burns including flash burns from heat generated by an electric arc, flame burns from materials that catch on fire from heating or ignition by electrical currents, and muscle contractions can cause a person to fall.


High voltage contact burns can burn internal tissues while leaving only very small injuries on the outside of the skin. - repair or replace damaged equipment immediately. 2) always tape cords to walls or floors when necessary. There are some safeguard procedures that can be followed to ensure electrical safety: 1) Inspect tools, and electrical fittings, power cords for damage or wear prior to each use. Nails and staples can damage cords causing fire and shock hazards. 3) Use cords or equipment that is rated for the level of amperage or wattage that you are using. 4) Always use the correct size fuse. Unplug any cords to these outlets and do not use until a qualified electrician has checked the wiring. 6) Always use ladders made of wood or other non - conductive materials when working with or near electricity or power lines. 7) Place halogen lights away from combustible materials such as cloths or curtains. Replacing a fuse with one of a larger size can cause excessive currents in the wiring and possibly start a fire. 5) Be aware that unusually warm or hot outlets may be a sign that unsafe wiring conditions exists.


Halogen lamps can become very hot and may be a fire hazard. 8) Risk of electric shock is greater in areas that are wet or damp. - each switch should be positively identified as to which outlet or appliance it is for. 12) do not use outlets or cords that have exposed wiring or use power tools with the guards removed. Install Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters, known also as GFCI, as they will interrupt the electrical circuit before a current sufficient to cause death or serious injury occurs. 9) Make sure that exposed receptacle boxes are made of non - conductive materials. 10) Know where the breakers and boxes are located in case of an emergency. 11) Label all circuit breakers and fuse boxes clearly. Do not block access to circuit breakers or fuse boxes and do not touch a person or electrical apparatus in the event of an electrical accident. A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter( GFCI) works by detecting any loss of electrical current in a circuit. Always disconnect the current first. When a loss is detected, the GFCI turns the electricity off before severe injuries or electrocution can occur.


GFCI wall outlets can be installed in place of standard outlets to protect against electrocution for just that outlet, or a series of outlets in the same branch. - a painful shock may occur during the time that it takes for the gfci to cut off the electricity so it is important to use the gfci as an extra protective measure rather than a replacement for safe work practices. A GFCI Circuit Breaker can be installed on some circuit breaker electrical panels to protect an entire branch circuit. Another common use for GFCI is for pools and hot tubs. Plug - in GFCIs can be plugged into wall outlets where appliances will be used and are commonly found in bathrooms. Test the GFCI monthly. If the GFCI is working properly, the light should go out.


First plug a" night light" or lamp into the GFCI - protected wall outlet( the light should be turned on) , then press the" TEST" button on the GFCI. - if not, have the gfci repaired or replaced. If the" RESET" button pops out but the light does not go out, the GFCI has been improperly wired and does not offer shock protection at that wall outlet. Reset the GFCI to restore power. Contact a qualified electrician to correct any wiring errors. Switch tools OFF before connecting them to a power supply. Power tools used incorrectly can electrically hazardous.


Disconnect power supply before making adjustments. - the grounded tool must have an approved 3 - wire cord with a 3 - prong plug. Ensure tools are properly grounded or double - insulated. This plug should be plugged in a properly grounded 3 - pole outlet. The operation of power tools might ignite flammable substances and in can cause an explosion near certain vapors and gases. Do not use electrical tools in wet conditions or damp locations unless tool is connected to a GFCI.


Never use extension cords as permanent wiring. - keep power cords away from heat, water and oil. Use extension cords only to temporarily supply power to an area that does not have a power outlet. They can damage the insulation and cause a shock. Cords should be put in conduit or protected by placing planks alongside them. Do not allow vehicles to pass over unprotected power cords. Check power cords and plugs daily.


Keep power cords clear of tools during use. - discard if worn or damaged. Extension cords themselves can be hazardous. Do not tie power cords in tight knots. Suspend power cords over aisles or work areas to eliminate stumbling or tripping hazards. Knots can cause short circuits and shocks. Many circuits are wired to twelve amp breakers so do not plug several extension cords into one outlet.


Loop the cords or use a twist lock plug. - electrical safety is simple. Safety devises are becoming safer each year. Electricity should be respected and precautions should be taken to prevent injuries. Its up to you to use them correctly. Be aware and be safe.

At These Times People Mean Well

Small business ideas don't let people steal your dreams - have you ever experienced people giving you more advice that you really wanted? However their bombardment of thought and ideas can be more detrimental then helpful. At these times people mean well.


I experienced this recently when I left my job and career of twenty five years to do something different. - i hate the term burned out, but i guess that is what i was. I had worked as a social worker for that time span and was feeling that I needed to take a break from the emotional turmoil of dealing with other peoples issues, crisis' s and problems on a day to day basis. I wanted to do something completely different. However when you do not have the experience or education to back that up it is hard to convince a perspective employer to give you an interview. I knew I had skills in many areas. I was trying to come up with small business ideas so I could be self employed.


Although some of the advice was sound, I wanted this venture to be mine. - when i mentioned this to people they either discouraged me by stating all the headaches that go with self employment, or they told me a number of small business ideas that they had considered. Through the years I have done many different crafts. There have been many times when people have seen my handiwork and have told me that I could sell my creations. Working with yarns, beads and the sewing machine was my way of working through the stress of dealing with people all day long. I had given away a great share of the things that I had made as gifts.


I had also started making knit purses as well as canvas bags. - however i had many pieces of jewelery, multiple quilted pillows, several quilts and several afghans. Of all the small business ideas that I had considered the idea of a craft boutique was the one that I thought was the most feasible. I also love to bake so I thought I could sell baked items in addition to the other things. I thought I could have my own things displayed, have an area for consignment craft items and a line of quality gift items. We live in a resort area so there are many visitors that come to the area. I spoke with several of the business owners about my small business ideas.


A small town four miles from our house has several gift shops and has specialized in drawing people to the community with special shopping event through the year. - they thought a shop like this would be a great compliment to the existing shops. I have decided that I am going to rent the space for six months and see what happens. There was a space to rent that had a kitchen area that has passed state inspection where I could make the baked goods. If things do not go well I will not be out a great deal of money and if they take off I will extend the lease. It will be a nice change of pace.
